Again, I have never in my entire life seen an issue that has so rapidly and thoroughly brought together people of every age group and political beliefs in a common purpose as the deep hatred of data centers and #AI being imposed on our lives. Politicians who haven't figured this out yet, irrespective of party, are standing on the beach while a gigantic tsunami is about to drown their political careers, as this has become a top issue that will drive voters.
I wish (hope) this was true. It's certainly true here. It's true in some communities fighting against a data center or two.
But any toe dip into the big socials or company board rooms or any number of people going crazy with Chat GPT paints a vastly different picture of how AI is perceived.
Some people already don't want to live in a world without it.
And I'm already incredibly used to bad acting politicians who never face consequences so I'm incredibly cynical there too.
@lauren I hesitate to blame the politicians. I think DC's will happen no matter what. The problem is the Tech industry ignored obvious public issues like added burdens on power and water. It seems to me that everybody should collaborate there are hundreds of superfund sites, abandoned buildings including factories. solar and wind power and water treatment all working together should make for a win win
@Oldmikie All the solar and wind power you can imagine isn't enough. Those babies suck power like earthbound black holes.
@lauren
If all those people opposing the datacentres are willing to stop using LLMs and the free services that adtech companies provide, it shouldn't be hard for them to stop the growth in the number of centres...
@elfburgerman Most of the usage these days is forced. You can't do a Google Search (or a search on many other sites or many other operations on many sites) without invoking it. The idea is to remove all choice.
@lauren Yes, comrade, AI is the third rail of this season. However, it is best to leave vital decisions to the vanguard party leaders. The people can’t be entrusted with such decisions. Of course, we can’t leave decisions to billionaires either. We should send billionaires to the fields to harvest crops. And those who don’t harvest their quota should be shot at sunrise.
