I'm not sure that's fair. AFAIK the ongoing salary is for continuing dev work behind the scenes, while others lead the org. As for shady, if he'd taken Venture Capital he could have made many times the salary he's received as BDFL of a donation-funded project.
@strypey Getting back on that, yes, I'm aware it's not fully fair. And I'm a bit torn about it as Gargron has done quite a job on Mastodon - but then again, I also see a bunch of people in my environment who, even though totally short on money, decided to chip in a few $ to support Mastodon because they believe in the cause. From that perspective, providing the founder with a seven digit revenue has a difficult taste to it.

I'm also short on money. So I didn't give any to Mastodon Inc. But if I had, I would expect them to spend it as they see fit.

AFAIK the salary is not for being a "founder", but for ongoing technical work. Like the salary Torvalds gets as the maintainer of Linux.

Arguably Dansup has overstretched himself (PixelFex, FediDB, Sup Messenger, Loops, etc), rather like Gargron was doing before the recent restructure. As a result, what gets work depends on what's itching at any given time.

@strypey To be sure, I'm not at all angry about @dansup or trying to blame him for things. There have been odd personal things in the past that I don't really understand but that's my thing I guess. My main "public gripe" here is him - specifically talking pixelfed - indeed having massively overstretched himself in here but ... being unable to agree on that. There has been too much communication all along the lines of "pixelfed is ready now I can focus on other projects" even /knowing/ pixelfed is far from ready in many aspects. From that perspective, and from the angle of rather low-level issues still unaddressed in pixelfed, I for sure wouldn't trust something like Sup for maybe more sensitive messaging. All of these things could be perfect if they were backed by some sort of entity, foundation, ... that is able to "scale" better in terms of personal and funding resources to get these things to a really ready, working state.
