One of my own core principles is that ethics which cannot be applied to real life are not worth holding.

I don’t have the option of using a slop free OS anymore. That has been taken from me against my will and advice. NetBSD cannot do what I need.

So the principle of “no LLM is acceptable” is DOA. I’m mad about that. I don’t want to live in a word of sloperating systems. I am forced to. My remaining choice is between having some agency over the slop firehose and having none. Both of these options suck. And I’m mad about that too.

@mos_8502 yeah, so far my impression of NetBSD is that - while I'm committed to using it for the application I've allocated to it (managing UPSes, switching power etc) and as my first foray into BSD world - it's kinda at the "Linux in the early 2000s" development level right now.

if I had piles of cash, I would donate. but I don't.

@deutrino If we’re going to use a sloperating system, isn’t there some way to better engineer around the flaws? Can we not build things taking into account the flaws in the machine?

@mos_8502 from what little I know, I think NetBSD has done exactly that in some important ways: I think a bunch of their hardware drivers involve a hardware abstraction layer to some degree. but without enough people building (and probably money too), a lot of drivers still just don't exist. and thus some people will be highly tempted to use genAI coding assistance to write drivers. which, like, I get it.

@mos_8502 I think if people want a non sloperating system to exist, they are going to have to be a lot more willing to part with money to pay devs to work on it.

and I don't just say that because I'd like to get paid to do something like that. I mean it's just not going to happen unless people pay for it, whether that be a donation model or something else.

Capitalists are lined up behind LLMs and Linux for the time being; your not going to be able to keep pace with the number of developers their money can buy. Your not going to ever bring the kinds of money capitalists throw at sloperating systems.

ERGO, you are never not going to be able to stop playing catchup with sloperating systems. Not in a feature parity sense anyway.

Speaking as someone who has been openly speculating for some time, that their career in IT is in a sense contributing to a system that is making the world worse.

If your life's value is on the line over LLM use or not. Then I would encourage you to examine broader ways of defining how your life has meaning/value.

@trashheap @mos_8502 even in slopworld, human developers aren't fungible, and everything that went into their life that got them to where they are now has meaning, which means what they choose to build has value even if they judiciously employ generative AI to help them build it. IMO.

I don’t know what I’m gonna do. I have to find something I can live with, that more or less does the job, and doesn’t sting me for cash every five minutes or blare ads into my brain.
