Note that the lawyer's apology and reflection - a learning exercise - was sufficient to purge any contempt here.

An unpleasant situation for all involved, it seems.

@neil If I were a lawyer who had done the work to get good at it — as I have in other fields — I would regard this as a betrayal of the entire profession. Never mind duty to the client, never mind scholarship, never mind even the pleasure of constructing a good argument, I'll just pay Nazis to half-arse it for me, pass it off as my own work and spend the afternoon at the links.

@neil It looks like the lawyer was working pro bono, so my guess is the initial use was to try and save time, since it wasn't billable.

However what seems to have made it far worse was saying it was a member of staff who actually used the AI, or an "intern", then refusing to provide that person's details, and finally awkwardly admitting there was no such person after all.

If, at outset, the lawyer had said "yes *I* used AI, sorry, was trying to save time, bad idea" it may have gone better.

@neil I think we have to change people's view here, but it's a start. There is no such thing as 'responsible use of AI'.

@neil Also, I wouldn't want to pay for a lawyer to work for me, and find they had cheated me and not actually done the work I paid them to do - surely, that is breach of contract.
