Looking back, it’s funny to recognise how backwards it all went with the App Store.
When it was at its peak (~2009-2015), with genuinely cool, useful, lovingly-crafted apps I would have easily paid €15-20 for, those were either free or, like, €1.99-3.99.
Now that it’s basically a wasteland with only a bunch of exceptions, everything is a subscription with one-time purchase prices that are outright extortionate.
@morrick I also remember how different the rules were back then. There were all kinds of cool apps like unauthorized third-party clients for everything and pirate music streaming apps that used VK.
Then Apple launched Apple Music and the latter category disappeared overnight because all of a sudden, "illegal file sharing" became a big deal that these kinds of apps inevitably get rejected over.
Breaking other services' ToS also gradually became a no-no, even when it's in the interest of people.
@morrick I worked at VK at the time and I vividly remember the utter horror of our iOS developers when Apple rejected the app for "illegal file sharing" for umpteenth time even though it was a bugfix update. They had to scramble to mostly remove the music functionality to get *anything* out to the users. The music section was gone, and the attachments in posts played snippets from iTunes.
