Math or maths? 🧮
@catsalad @Guillotine_Jones the british liked math so much they came out with the sequel, maths
@catsalad
My secret third thing is that I had -- and still feel the effects of -- a learning shortcoming associated with either math or maths or both, CatSalad.
Fortunately that did NOT prevent me from being a lover of cats.
@catsalad arithmetic is not algebra is not calculus is not statistics.
@catsalad Mathamphetamines
@catsalad formerly math, but I like "maths" better so adopting that usage despite my American English background
@catsalad Depends: am I studying or doing it?
@catsalad ahem, i think it is important to recognize, which, for some reason, nobody in this debate seems particularly interested in acknowledging, that "mathematics" is a collective noun referring to the entire field and that "mathematic" (or as, it's more commonly rendered, "mathematical") is, in fact, an adjective, and that it is ultimately somewhat backwards to naively assume that this adjective denotes that its subject is pertaining to the entire field of mathematics when it seems perfectly natural that it refers instead to a noun having the qualities of a "mathem," derived simply from the greek "mathēma" which in turn yielded the "mathēmatikos" we are more familiar with.
therefore it seems plain to me that this question would be entirely obviated if we were merely to adopt the most obvious linguistic form and refer to an item of mathematical significance as being "a mathem," or, if we require a plural as we may if our work involves a collection of related formulae or equations, as "one or more mathemes."
therefore one does or solves or develops or is stumped by and cries over a mathem or a series of mathemes -- or put another way, a "mathem" is defined as "something that one maths" -- whereas one studies the field of mathematics to learn how to better math the mathems that one might encounter in a mathematical situation. qed.
@catsalad a nice way to geolocate your audience
who follows you more, 'Mericans or the Commonwealth nations
@catsalad as an erstwhile BRITISH mathematician they can pry my Maths from my cold dead hands... then walk barefoot over a floor of Lego.
That's Maths and Lego ... absolutely not Math and Legos 😁
This is my hill and I intend to die on it. ;)
@catsalad Just the one, thanks
@catsalad Mmmphth with novocain.
