Keep it weird. Like the spelling of weird, because "I before E, except after C, or when sounded like A as in neighbor and weigh," none of which fits weird, so this is a dumb rule that only a writing instructor can explain the origin of. ;-D

@ramsey @DanielMReck @MaryAustinBooks Without knowing when the spelling of "weird" was determined, I couldn't say, but that's the question most of the time: what did it sound like when scribes wrote it down?
