My partner told me about how RuPaul used to have a "You got SheMail" bit in the early seasons, but stopped that after being made aware of how that became a transphobic trope.
I get the fediverse may not see RuPaul as a legend and icon, the way us older gays do, but she really brought queer celebration and awareness to the mainstream since the 80's.
@dansup He has continued to be very problematic on the topic however, I think he can both be an icon while being a problem.
@reflex How so? He has crowned several trans queens, but when it comes to Alaska and whats her face, I can understand why RuPaul would be hesitant to invite them back. They didnt exactly respect the rules, leading to that disqualification, right?
@dansup I'm not going to speak for the trans community, I'm not part of it although I'm very supportive. I will say that the ones I know do not feel he has changed his mind, his approach has been to avoid letting it harm his show's image not actually embracing trans women as the women they are.
I'm sure someone in that community could probably give you their perspective with examples better than I can.
I enjoy Drag Race, but I totally get why some do not.
@reflex I totally do not understand that as he has not only crowned trans dolls, but also invited trans icons like Hunter Schafer as guest judges.
I fail to see any sort of transphobia from Ru, and really, you outta think about how he kinda made his whole career on switching genders and made that mainstream, there are pics of Trump and Guliani in drag.
How is he problematic at all? (asking the elder gays)
@dansup by the way, what's this with seemingly every gay from North America being obsessed with this whole drag thing? I.. just don't get it? Among Russian-speaking gays hardly anyone ever brings up this whole concept. For all intents and purposes, it seems entirely absent from our culture.
