so glad i set up the approval process for new accounts on ResearchEquals - already caught several potential issues.
i am learning a lot about AI generated content, and they're getting very intricate. paper mills are passé, they're now coming to the various repositories etc to lay breadcrumbs of seeming authenticity.
any repository/platform that does not do approval, is increasingly being weaponized for this. i am looking at several places that do not have active moderation...

On FediScience we are facing the same issue. I wish back a time where I could live in blissful ignorance without harm because most people are well-meaning and the rest would not have all those well-scaling tools....
@rupdecat @chartgerink oh wow, I did not even think that would be a thing! How does that work? Bots trying to make accounts to create another layer of fake authenticity for other platforms?
@mario_angst_sci @rupdecat on mastodon servers, it's generated signup texts. for ResearchEquals, it takes a bit more to describe than just in a toot, so if this is of interest to folk I might write about it sometime.
