Whatever I think about Andy Burnham, its becoming pretty clear that the number of aspects of UK society that people are hoping he will (pretty quickly) sort out, will lead almost inevitably to political disappointment;
even if he *did* bring a perfect policy portfolio (not that such a thing exists) to his PMship the time that is needed to resolve the UK's current political economic malaise would leave him open to major criticism for not delivering...
We need a different politics.
@ChrisMayLA6 it would be good if he'd stop Starmer's policies targeting trans, immigrant, and disabled people, but that doesn't seem to be on the cards.
I'd forgive slow movement on the economy if they'd stop being evil
@ChrisMayLA6 I think this is true in most western countries now: elected leaders are cut down as soon as they assume office. We act as if there are simple solutions for everything, if leader x would only just do it. Conspiracies and corruption are soon implied because (s)he doesn’t “simply” do x. Effect of social media perhaps?
Social media & the 'traditional' media, both of which have in recent decades accelerated the 'news cycle' leaving little space for politics with a longer-term time-frame
Counterexample: Mamdani. He didn't fix everything on day one, but he focused on making sure that the highest short-term returns were there at the start. You can set the groundwork for long-term wins while you're doing this, but there's a lot that can be fixed quite easily by just stopping doing the actively stupid thing.
And you can also start communicating about the big things early. It took Blair's government almost a year to implement a minimum wage, but they were talking about it even before they were elected and didn't stop talking about it as part of their agenda.
