I want to get better at recognizing begging calls, being able to ID species based on the sounds of the babies. It's hard!
@idzie Agreed! I’m always a little surprised that Merlin doesn’t do well with young birds. I’ve gotten adept at phoebe and titmouse calls and they generally always sound the same. My general rule is if it’s “SSS” then it’s a baby. 🤭
-Silly
-Squeaky
-Several at once
@danmccullough it's SO bad with young birds! And I love that 😆
@idzie On a slightly different note (!), I have heard what sounded like a sparrow calling but from very far away. After a while, it hit me that the call was really coming from close by, in a hedge. My guess is that it is a kind of sparrow, but very small, maybe a "marsh sparrow?" I've seen it but rarely and it is quite a bit smaller than regular House Sparrows. The way it disguises where it is by making you think its call is much farther away than it really is to me is so cool.
@flyhigh I'd really recommend downloading the Merlin app and using the sound ID feature! It gets things wrong sometimes, but is accurate most of the time :)
@idzie It's really hard!! I recognized my young cardinal this morning, but it's just because I heard it yesterday.
@stephanie yeah same, I'm remembering the ones I've been hearing a lot in my yard, but other ones...
