Do any lab managers/techs/scientists here use nitrogen generators instead of cylinders? How much financial sense did it make? Or was it a safety/quality of life thing? #chemistry #laboratory #academia

@kirk We don't right now, but I know one of my supervisors has seriously considered it and it might be part of some renovation plans. One of the big considerations as to it remaining in the plans is that they apparently make a ton of noise so you need to have some place that isn't "in the middle of the lab" to house it and I'm not sure they solved that issue.
(for reference we use a low pressure dewar in about a week an a half for our TC storage and the renovated space is anticipated to house at least one large MS instrument that would use the boil off from high pressure tanks, but I don't what what the expected rate of usage on that would be)
@SRLevine I assume it's the air compressor part that's the noisiest? I have never seen one, seems like there are membrane-based approaches and pressure-swing adsorption---not sure on the noise difference between them if any.
@kirk I'm not sure, it might have to do with the size of the air compressor? Though even small ones are pretty noisy.
