Forward deployed engineers, for when you need to sell a product that isn't actually able to do what you've marketed it as, and creates as many problems as it solves when folk adopt it of their own free will

The thing about this for me is that with these sales adjacent engineering roles there's always a tension with the product management we pretend determines what software gets built, and a related conflict with building businesses that are sustainable over the long term.. This stuff is taking us beyond what I thought was the extreme end of working that way
I mean, it's typically not sustainable for companies that are at an early stage, massive ones with incumbent status who've already gotten themselves embedded everywhere can get away with that shite more readily
It's just wild to see companies making the mistakes that sunk a million startups before them be kept afloat by massive collective capital investment and ideological zeal
