Welp, as a side-effect of the cataract surgery I no longer need varifocal lenses. So my new glasses cost about 40% as much as the previous pair! (When they arrive, in a week or so.)

@cstross Odd. I thought that the implant lenses had a fixed focus, so varifocal was necessary, unless you went for one eye long and the other short.
In fact that's pretty much how my eyes have ended up naturally, and I definitely wear varifocals so I get good binocular vision. Plus there's a band 3 feet away where neither eye can focus.
But hey, YMMV.
@tokensane One eye long, one eye short. But I only really need glasses for screen work/reading now; unless I'm driving (and I don't own a car any more) I'm fine with fancy reading glasses.
@cstross wait, how are you going to see for the next 7 days without them? 🧐
@cstross When I got cataract surgery I opted for intraocular lenses with 7 focal zones so I could feel like the 6 Million Dollar Man. Body parts with serial numbers...
@cstross Just as long as they aren't rose-coloured.
@cstross Congratulations. I stopped playing basketball, dropped progressive lenses, went to plastic glasses -- cost dropped 90%. It's nice having backups for my backups.
@cstross I was once told by someone in that particular industry that, from the point of view of the machine, it really doesnt' matter in terms of time and energy what kind of lenses it cuts from the block that is its input. Don't know if that is true, though.
@cstross same here. Welcome to the club! Congrats!
@cstross Yay! That's wonderful!
