@thomasfuchs Are you (or who wrote this) secretly worshipping Steve Ballmers sweaty blue shirts? 😂🤣
@thomasfuchs Monorail! Monorail! Monorail!
@thomasfuchs
“2026: if your best friend isn’t an AI by now, you’re not actually living”
Note to self: still goin’ strong…
@thomasfuchs OTOH, I was dubious about predictions on smart phones but they are more powerful than the futurists ever imagined
@thomasfuchs where's my internet of things? I heard it'll be bigger than the smartphone revolution
@thomasfuchs AOL will become the portal to the Internet.
@GayDeceiver @thomasfuchs 1999 is the year of the linux desktop
@thomasfuchs Otoh, nobody saw email coming.
@thomasfuchs @tommorris well, the first is actually possible...
@thomasfuchs Funnily enough, "metaverse" was a weird attempt to rebrand proven technology that's not going anywhere, but trying to tie it with VR (which is expensive and not everyone gets along with it) and flavor of the week crypto shit that didn't make any sense.
MUDs were metaverses, MMOs are a dying breed with some long staying, established specimens. Fortnite and Roblox are the modern metaverses that are thriving.
Flying cars for the win.
@thomasfuchs something something civilization on Mars
@thomasfuchs binned all my records and repurchased all my music on 8-track cassettes
Ok, see you later, off to cross the Atlantic in a zeppelin
@thomasfuchs i dunno, flash *was* pretty cool. it got us strong bad at least
@thomasfuchs A crypto guru telling me I'll look stupid?
Sure. 😂
@thomasfuchs
At least flash had a vibrant game development scene
@thomasfuchs Visual programming has been around the corner from mainstream for as long as I've been touching computers. It feels like fusion that way.
@thomasfuchs This is the natural course of life and these things are inevitable.
@thomasfuchs I distinctly remember that being said about the internet.
@thomasfuchs VRML will be the end of the flat web. Who wants to browse text in 2D when you can browse in 3D?
Only someone too young to remember SecondLife could have possibly thought the Metaverse was going to be something anyone wanted.
@thomasfuchs "Futurology is a mug's game", but I also hold respect for it. You have to make a prediction to judge a prediction, and to judge your own self.
May I counter with:
"Touch screens are the future", or,
"Smartphones will take over" — 1990s man, probably holding a Newton or Palm Pilot
Some things need work, lots of hard work
The steam engine was like that — spending centuries as a stupid toy

@thomasfuchs
I remember when the IBM PC jr. was going to change everything.
I assume that happened....I haven't really been paying attention during the intervening years
@thomasfuchs Today my boss told everyone in engineering that if they didn't get on the AI train it would be like the folks who didn't get on board with writing JavaScript for websites, or [half a dozen flawed analogies]. That they would get left behind and become unemployable because hiring managers would obviously choose people who can churn out code faster. And he didn't want anyone getting left behind so they need to get on board and start learning it.
🤦♂️🤦🤦♀️
(Incoming layoffs? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)
@thomasfuchs If expert systems weren't inevitable, how do you explain what I just did with a C64?
@thomasfuchs covfefe covfefe
@thomasfuchs 640 kb should be enough for anyone
@thomasfuchs Why's my boy Flash catching strays? It was actually tight for quite some time 😂 of course it's time came, but it at least DID deliver.
Make sure you buy a 3D TV
@thomasfuchs lies, Silverlight is gonna replace Flash!!! 😏
@thomasfuchs Forty years ago last month I got my first software development job.
So it's about forty years and 30 days since I first heard someone say "... and we won't need programmers any more".
@thomasfuchs My nephew works in tech and he's pulled this shit with me on crypto/blockchain and NFTs and every time I'm like, "Eh, I don't think so, guess we'll see." To his credit, he didn't bother reaching out to prophesize about AI to me 😂
@thomasfuchs Lol this was great, and so true. Gotta love hype cycles, especially when they get out of control
@thomasfuchs Mars! We are going to settle Mars
@thomasfuchs "The safety of steel between pedal and wheel."
@thomasfuchs expert systems at least had the promise of bieng reliable
@thomasfuchs Buy a plot on Mars now!
@thomasfuchs this man is a prophet
pen computing seems the most doable of this list.
@thomasfuchs there was that whole metaverse land rush. Like better get some virtual real estate now before it all... goes?
Was also a way of younger people locked out of the real housing market to have some sort of property ownership. Not sure how having a metaverse island makes you less homeless.
@thomasfuchs I think what you are referring it possible obviously you leading a great operation
@thomasfuchs can someone explain to me how they tied crypto to a fiat currency? Where is the inherent value in a bitcoin?
@crumbletiltskin @thomasfuchs The inherent value is in mass delusion. Or I guess in faith that money, launderers and drug dealers will always need a way to do their business. 🤷🏻♂️
640KB should be enough for everyone.
@thomasfuchs @steltenpower MOOCs will replace education and badges your degrees
@thomasfuchs dafuq is pen computing?
@thomasfuchs Looking over this list of over-hyped technologies, I am so glad I did not get involved with any of them. I like tried, true, and practical tools.
@thomasfuchs "Experts system are inevitable". Can someone explain this on ?
@jrdepriest @thomasfuchs A lot of my suggestions turned out to be just beyond 50 years old. Microprocessors, TCP, Unix.
I think I'll go with the iPhone 3G, aka, 'the smartphone'. And yeah, that has microprocessors and TCP and Unix. My argument would be that the integration of all those technologies created another thing entirely.
@thomasfuchs One could think that the crystal balls of past IT visionaries were already running on an early LLM. You are so talented!
Thanks for the laughs!

@thomasfuchs never forgot the "Mars in 2025 !". Still waiting to flee the madness of humanity 🌎
@thomasfuchs Something something XHTML
@thomasfuchs The real tragedy is that Flash was long dead by the time NFTs came around. 🙃
(But for real in hindsight I kinda miss Flash sometimes.)
@thomasfuchs I'm reading this post on google glass and then writing it up in a knol
@joelvanderwerf @thomasfuchs
Can you link it to the team Wave please?
@eestileib @joelvanderwerf @thomasfuchs NGL I kinda miss Wave!
@thomasfuchs And forty years of no need to learn to touchtype bc everything will be voice input. 😹
@thomasfuchs @User47 @crumbletiltskin it's the promise is pseudonymity that fools them (you can track wallet IDs, not people; as if that would stop inquiries)
@thomasfuchs @CryogenicIce9 the were so many things in XHTML2 that were better than HTML5 that it's hard to count that a win
@thomasfuchs Join the techy side of Mastodon they said, it'll be fun they said! 😡
Nah I know it had to go, I just grew up on newgrounds haha. That's pretty interesting though!
@thomasfuchs @utf_7 the opening to this Wikipedia entry reads like a classic @jk toot
@thomasfuchs
No no, you just need to *believe*
The next big thing will be BIG! Totally unlike all those other pevious NBDs
@thomasfuchs someone already mastered dark souls with this?
