I’m rediscovering the Upstream Podcast (I learned of it a year ago but didn’t explore). It seems like it’s up my street.

But it has a most curious website:

- it has some 30 or so URLs: https://noai.duckduckgo.com/?q=site%3Aupstreampodcast.org&rpl=1&ia=web
- but its homepage only links through to one of them

It apparently has over 60k unique listeners a month and nearly a quarter of a million followers on Instagram.

It’s proof that you don’t need a coherent website to build a huge following (that’s not news) but…

…It makes me a bit sad that a channel promoting alternative economics is so all in on putting that message out on platform capitalism to the exclusion of almost anything else :(

Reaching the masses is not a bad thing. It’s not for me, but I’m glad people are doing it. It’s the not doing it anywhere else as well that saddens me

…I note also that Upstream is on Patreon – who have one of the shittest logos ever – where they have > 3k paying members, so that’s at least $12k per month.

Good on them for building such a following. It’s just kind of weird looking in from the outside upon critiques of tech feudalism building financial success on tech feudalism
