I really wish people would stop equating "not selling user data" with privacy. Loads of tech giants don't sell, or even share your data with third parties directly. They would be stupid to, it's their most valuable asset. They hoard it! Doesn't mean they don't collect & use every bit of it themselves.

@Techaltar
An organization called the United States of America will become the world's most invasive personal data gathering/using/abusing organization. And, anyone in the Trump Admin that may need our data will get it. ICE and LEO are already abusing our data in illegal ways. But crimes committed by LEO don't count anymore.

Remember, Elon Musk already has a huge chuck of our data from his stint as THE HEAD DOGE official.

I see a quite similar challenge to understand the differences as it is for UI vs UX, as well as de difference between sympathy and empathy.

One important aspect that privacy, UX and empathy shares - is they are highly invisible. As in you have to understand and visualize cause and effect mentally how it is for both oneself and others.

And in an all-the-more complex web of pieces that affect each other more or less, and in combinations. That is hard!

@Techaltar They sell access to your data. Which is pretty much the same. If you can buy access, you can reconstruct it with some effort.

@Techaltar Imagine Internet without tracking, Android without tracking, someone should study the reduction of carbon footprint if we had our devices without trackers.

@Techaltar I think that right now lots of services just collect everything they can with hopes that they can monetize it. And that's the real issue - collect everything they can and nobody asks if they should or is there a reason for it.

I see so much websites that doesn't need anything but have popups with several hundred "partners".

@Techaltar Despite trying, no other model has been found to fund the Internet. This is like Germany’s nuclear shutdown. You cannot stop a system that works (even if has evil features) until you have completely created a new system that recapitulates all the desirable features while being less evil.

@Techaltar This one could use a bit of clarification, large tech companies do share your data and maybe even sell it. But in this statement I think it refers to privacy claims that are backed by things like "we won't sell your data"

And then forgetting they share it with a few 1000 of their close friends ablobgrimace

@Techaltar Yes for the first sentence, but can you clarify what makes a thousand partners processing outlook data meaningfully different from selling user data? The data has to be shared to be "processed" and there must be a financial contract between these partners?

@Techaltar yes, they absolutely do share your data directly? Don't give out misinformation. They give this shit directly to data brokers, which include credit companies.

@domo @Techaltar did you read the comment. Because that’s not what he said. Unless you are arguing that there are zero big tech companies that don’t sell your data.

@Techaltar There's the important distinction: not selling user data is required to have privacy, but it's certainly not sufficient to truly provide it.
