My Ubuntu Summit talk is up! Where I talk about:
1. How Desktop UX is effectively dead
2. Why I hate the term UX/UI with the heat of 1000 suns
3. How OSS can actually innovate in #ux

RE: https://social.coop/@scottjenson/115707071905814326

There are 300K+ views on Youtube of my talk! I've never had a talk get this amount of traction. I'm a bit in shock.

It's confusing as I've been speaking/writing about this for years. Somehow the stars aligned this time.

Upside is that I've had lots of interesting conversations with folks because of this.

@tris I have now! 😎

I've been working on #ux in #opensource for years now and it's a challenging problem. Lots of good people trying hard with very limited resources. One of the core points of my talk was to actually fund this work. It would help quite a bit

@scottjenson @tris I'm pretty sure that people in the gnome design team would be happy to get your input, so feel free to join (or ask to be invited) to the gnome-design matrix channel!

@scottjenson @tris that, plus I think @tbernard could be a direct contact that is also in mastodon

@3v1n0 @tris @tbernard oh we've chatted quite a bit over the last 2 years. I think Gnome is reorganizing a bit this year so I haven't really expected much engagement.

Also the Google Algorithm aligned!
I wasn't aware of you or your work but YouTube recommended your video and it sounded like the sort of thing that I would like so I watched.
And I am glad because it was interesting. 👍

@scottjenson Something that is "a Linux desktop" is never going to have mass appeal. The *nix distro culture isn't suited to consumers: It has no opinions about PC hardware, no hw certification program, no stable high-level API, no stable default UI, all the UIs are shallow and barely touch drivers and low-level configs, remote support is near impossible (how do you walk users through a UI that is a wildcard?), online help is 98% shell, etc.

I agree with some of your points, but "Linux desktop" is a geek's mirage that consumers can't see. In the past, the best candidate for a FOSS desktop "breakout" was elementaryOS before they caved and became another "Linux distro" (it started out as as its own thing, which happened to use the Linux kernel). The second best was Ubuntu, with Shuttleworth trying to create a synchronized dependency scheme (which was rejected by corporate America because it threatened Red Hat's market position).

Android is a true consumer FOSS operating system. Version 16 now has a desktop UI and even the FSF is making plans to advance FOSS Android. There you go.

@scottjenson Maybe part of it is that the average person is now realizing that OSes are just getting worse every release (Windows & macOS). Adding junk they don't want (AI) & changing the interface in ways we've known for 40 years are bad (removal of colour, transparent buttons, etc.).

I just installed macOS 26 on a VM & it's just painful; feels like it was designed by an 8 year old. I kind of want to dig out my old Apple HIG books and send them to someone at Apple.

Anyway - loved your talk!
