I find it disillusioning to see the casual use of "AI" slowly creeping into our hacker circles. Most of the discussions about AI focus on the quality of its output. I think we're not doing a good job communicating its more fundamental dangers.

In this blog post I write about how tools shape who we are and why the resource intensiveness of AI is ingrained in its purpose. About the devaluation of skills, and power cycles.

Let me know what you think.

@fionafokus Thanks for writing this!

On one hand it's sad to see so many skilled developers and hackers who cave in to peer pressure. On the other hand, my impression is they often seem to have been forced by their bosses at work, which then spills over into private life too.

Let's make worker owned #tech #cooperatives more common and it will be easier to keep control of the tools.

@fionafokus thank you for this post. every day i feel so crazy that these tools are being normalized. i never want to have to convince my computer to do work via prompts. i portend a lot of ppl will regret their decisions to build workflows around these tools when llms are no longer fully subsidized and the true price is revealed.

@fionafokus@mystical.garden hey fiona. I wrote a piece on AI. My views are highly nuanced and it is extremely complex to put my ideas onto a post in a way that people will understand exactly what I mean (regardless or not of whether they agree with it).

Before sharing my piece, let me be clear about what I mean. Yes: AI can be used to increase productivity. No: I don't think we can win this battle against AI. We can't win because in this capitalist hellscape world, the sad reality is we are limited to money, to a great extent. Poor people have little leverage, in every sense imaginable.

With that being said, I agree with most if not all of your post. In particular, the power aspect. We are empowering the already rich, and we are actively dismantling the working class by increasing AI adoption. AI companies talk about world-changing implications like curing cancer because that is good marketing, but what they really want to do is get rid of workers entirely. Capitalism cheat code: replace your employees with a ChatGPT subscription that never sleeps, never takes PTO, never unionised, never moves to your competitor.

With the above in mind, I hope you can understand what I express in my post: https://ulveon.net/p/2025-08-10-ai-is-not-a-fad-its-here-to-stay/

I am not exactly optimistic, but I also feel powerless.

And yes, AI is exactly the opposite of hacker culture, and they should all be ashamed.

@fionafokus I agree with you. I was thinking the other day about how sloppy thinking leads to sloppy code, and back around again. It's not a new idea, but LLMs massively increase the problem.
