This is a must read, and a good one to share with people who insist either that 1) the economy is fine because the statistics say so (like alot of Dems before the last election); or 2) that people are poor because they don't work hard enough.

The truth is it takes more years of work to pay for essentials now than it did 20 or 40 or 60 years ago...much, much more.

Economists try to elide that fact by adjusting their inflation numbers to account for (supposed) improvements in quality, but what they are really doing is covering up that the basic costs of participating in the economy have skyrocketed. It hardly matters that my phone can do more now than one from the 90s - both then and now I needed a phone to participate in society, and now my only option is a way more expensive smart phone.
