I’m still unable to get any mail client to actually work well.

Thunderbird shows quoted lines prefixed with a right angle bracket (greater-than symbol), but if I prefix a line with that manually, it doesn’t send it as a quoted line, but sometimes, it does!

I don’t understand.

@ramsey you can use menu 'Paste as quote' or shortcut `Ctrl+Shift+O`

@gregr I tried that, but it also mangled things. Thunderbird does weird line wrapping in the editor.

@ramsey better with Edit > Rewrap or `Ctrl+r` ?

@ramsey As we have strayed further from God’s light (plain text clients), we have suffered.

@ramsey Any chance that rich text/html emails are involved somehow?

@kboyd These are supposedly plain text.

I should clarify: this is not a new problem. It is a problem that has been going on for 30 years, since I stopped using Pine.

Interestingly, php.net and externals.io did the right thing, even if my mail client doesn’t show it the right way:

⁃ https://externals.io/message/127984

@ramsey I have the same issue here on mastodon and with Teams

At least with mastodon, I noticed that the > needs to be at the very start of the line and prefixed by an empty line

@GuillaumeRossolini I’m not sure what you mean. Mastodon doesn’t > for quoting. At least, vanilla Mastodon doesn’t. Some versions that have applied alternate patches might support that.

@ramsey Clearly the answer is to go back to Pine.
