Relying on ChatGPT to teach you about a topic leaves you with shallower knowledge than Googling and reading about it, according to new research that compared what more than 10,000 people knew after using one method or the other.

The difference in understanding held even when the marketing researchers made sure the test subjects were presented with identical facts. https://theconversation.com/learning-with-ai-falls-short-compared-to-old-fashioned-web-search-269760

The Conversation

Learning with AI falls short compared to old-fashioned web search

Doing the mental work of connecting the dots across multiple web queries appears to help people understand the material better compared to an AI summary.

@TheConversationUS I guess this proves that despite web search being shit nowadays, even at its absolute worst it's still better than an LLM.

"we do not believe the solution to these issues is to avoid using LLMs"

Why? The article offers not a single reason why you should NOT avoid using an LLM.

Worst of all:

It's very often spitting out *false* claims.

"To be clear, we do not believe the solution to these issues is to avoid using LLMs, especially given the undeniable benefits they offer in many contexts." Be so fr right now. What benefits? It's accelerating climate change, stealing people's work en messe, and it *has a death toll tied to it*! WHAT BENEFITS?!

@TheConversationUS Googling still involves active reading, and requires you to have a basic understanding of the information you read to make use of it. ChatGPT requires no cognitive effort whatsoever from the user. It's a plagiarism machine, pure and simple.

@TheConversationUS I use both... duckduckgo searches are usually better than it's AI but somethimes the AI outputs what I need directly.

AI requires an UBI to soften it all up but sadly, the fake left hates UBI and is adamant that rich politicians with their rich campaign managers and the rich leaders of their party, based on recommendations from k-street should decide what richer than average niches should get money.
