@cstross
Wait, Framework, nazis?? What have I missed here? I was thinking my new laptop would be a framework.
@cstross
The Wikipedia article says he's banned from serving on the board of any public corporation.
@cstross why would Apple put Shkreli on the board? He doesn’t have anything good to offer them, and plenty of bad (in the form of people hating him for very good reason and also being a convicted felon)
@cstross framework is owned by Nazis? Crap.
@thehomespundays Not confirmed owned by Nazis, but donated money to some very sketchy (white supremacist run) open source software projects then doubled down on it in the name of keeping free software open to all. A huge own goal ...
@cstross @thehomespundays I have a framework, and am watching with some interest their faceplant. I suspect that they will slowly and *very* quietly move away from Nazi-owned products.
A former customer had some bad things in their package, and they took about six months integrating replacements for them. OK, they were't very agile, but hardware companies aren't either.
If they stay Nazi, I'll slowly and very quietly move away from *them*.
@cstross @thehomespundays there is always MNT Reform laptops which are defo anti nazis... I'm saving for one https://mntre.com/
@soapdog @thehomespundays I am beset by a sense of aesthetics: that thing has been beaten with the ugly stick until it bleeds, and I do not want something that looks like that positioned in front of my eyeballs for 60 hours a week!
@cstross @thehomespundays to each their own, I find them very cute. I will for sure get one soon and then you'll be able to see it during some ESFF meet.
@cstross As long as the next Generic White Guy understands and follows the Apple Business Ethics rules we had refreshers on every six months. You know the one that says bribing government officials is wrong.
@cstross
I would suggest moving now and buy yourself time to fix all the jiggly bits that bother you. Or perhaps look at #OpenDarwin or an even better option would be #PureDarwin. You still get the NetBSD, but it is a bit closer to your existing MacOS.
@cstross
Just saw another potential MacOS replacement... It's called #RayvnOS at;
https://ravynos.com/
They say it is in pre-alpha so prolly not somethin you are interested in, but thought I would post it just in case.
I think I might install it in my #Proxmox server when I get it back online.
@nikatjef Stupid question: how viable is WINE on *BSD? Or failing that, running macOS applications? (I have some key workflow that *can't* be supported purely by *NIX flavoured software. Key workflow as in, it's critical to my ability to earn a living.)
@cstross
I am not a BSD user, but my understanding is that WINE is fully supported on NetBSD and FreeBSD, but not OpenBSD or whatever BSDi became.
Perhaps you can list some of the workflow requirements and the BSD users can provide some guidance on possible replacements
@nikatjef @ScrivenerApp is essential. Can't work without it. (Also need a password manager I can migrate to from 1Password, and a Dropbox client. At a pinch, can use a different cloud sync service but it *must* support macOS and iOS for other family members.)
@cstross @nikatjef presumably Maestral could run on a BSD, at least the command line part: https://maestral.app/
@cstross
I just did a quick search to get an idea of the issues running Scrivner under WINE and it got me thinking... Years ago, there was a package called "Play On Linux" and another called "Crossover Office". These packages took over where WINE left off and would write specific tools to tweak / tune WINE for specific games and office apps, similar to how SteamDeck works. Both of them were commercial products with better than tier 2 support lines.
@cstross I was thinking that surely some Trump son would claim a spot, on the basis of “national interest” or something
