This should probably be a blogpost, but for now anyway:

* The GDPR was a good try, but - inevitably, given the politics - a compromise. There are bits that I would change.

* I am massively unpersuaded that wholesale reform / revocation is the way to go. But then I am not trying to build a widespread surveillance or AI tool.

* DPA guidance is pretty good, in terms of scope and accessibility.

* Enforcement is inconsistent, and DPAs are generally underfunded (which may or may not be linked to underperformance).

@neil if i had my druthers, whatever they are, I'd make it so that the government was bound by GDPR too. who makes a data protection law and almost entirely excludes themselves?

@neil Enforcement is inconsistent and well we all know that removing funding from enforcing agencies is one of the most effective ways of lobbying away a law. It can be done quickly (budget periods are usually shorter than legislative processes) and will be met with much less resistance because following all budget changes is unfeasible for a working mum while following all (proposed) law changes is reasonable.

@dequbed @neil But funding adequately the agency is part of the GDPR (article 52, point 4). A government can't just cut the budget and not expect something going up to a higher court.

@neil Can I play?

* There is a colossal amount of bollocks talked about the GDPR, and a tendency among people who feel passionately about its subject matter to assert that it says things it just doesn’t.

* People forget that PECR exists.

@hedders @neil I've had days where I wished I could forget that PECR exists.

(completely agree with both your substantive points though)
