RE: https://indieweb.social/@bonfire/115507615653471686

What @bonfire are working on is impressive and important and y'all should consider supporting their crowdfunder!

Bonfire was absolutely the top contender for my work building New_ Public's Local project (https://newpublic.org/local); in the end, I'm building mostly from scratch not because Bonfire isn't great, but because I wanted our team's 2+ years of research, planning, and design to lead the conversation, not the technology.

BUT we're in a unique spot. Most communities could use Bonfire.

@blaine @bonfire I’m following both closely. Unfortunately Facebook Groups still dominates as the “forum” on our community and moderation is such a big challenge… there’s no energy left to worry about technology

@villasbc @bonfire we're excited to share more about what we've been up to!

I have some hope that moderation in small communities is easier than in big, global spaces (still not easy, but maybe possible!).

Our priority on Local is to build a product based on prosocial strategies and things that we've learned from extensive community research. It was really important to us that our product insights led the technology decisions, not the other way around as is so often the case.

Is your local project going to be FOSS? We run some geographical social networks, eg https://vive.transitiontogether.org.uk/ but FOSS is a hard requirement for us

I love @bonfire's slow and determined approach to building this important piece of the social web.

As we at New_ Public work towards our early Local lab launch, I'm really looking forward to participating in wider conversations about how communities can thrive in federated social environments. Bonfire's work is so inspiring towards that goal.

Congrats on the 1.0, y'all! 🎉❤️

@blaine Thanks for the kind words! We really appreciate the work and narrative that @wearenew_public is pushing forward 😊 and we are all for building bridges;) As the @anewsocial crew says: people not platforms ✊

@blaine @bonfire I am surprised that the links on https://newpublic.org/local go to google docs, notion and substack, all commercial and problematic platforms. Am I missing something?!

@hpk I can't/won't speak for the organization on this or try to defend or reject the current decisions on those things, but I think this sums up my feelings on it: https://defcon.social/@riverpunk/115457100817393447

I will say that I work with people who are incredibly committed, deeply thoughtful, and strategic, and who are focused on addressing a relatively narrow set of problems in ethical ways, with relatively limited resources to do so.
