@urlyman King Bill has not proved himself a great futurist. He saw no need for more than 640K or the Internet.
…In the wake of one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes in history, I’m sure Jamaicans must be comforted by Bill Gates pronouncing that climate change is not so bad after all
…I mean we should definitely be ratcheting down our impetus of change right? And who better to listen to than a man who got rich making shit software
@urlyman Gates "shit software"
-- old-time acquaintance who worked in computers, to me:
"you even make your life hard for yourself by using Linux rather than Billgatesux " 🤣
He's got a point - even if the software sux, I still cant get perfectly good PC laptops to run either #bluetooth or #wifi because he had a "proprietary" firmware-driver deal with #Broadcom that's never been fully incorporated into the #linux system.
#BCM43142 wireless adapter. Fixes for earlier and other distro's dont seem to work down the line for me. Must be many other examples of this.
Sorry for flying off on this tangent on your thread.
@urlyman i don't think he's trying to make the climate look less urgent, but he wants to salvage his efforts on global healthcare and reducing poverty, and these things will also be important to lower the bearing of the poorest countries in the crisis. But of course article do their headlines on the the most controversial part, even if that requires twisting his words.
@tshirtman I agree that the article is spinning for clicks but frankly I kind of don’t care. His contribution to climate change discourse has been poisonous and many aspects of his philanthropy are questionable at best https://www.currentaffairs.org/news/2022/07/how-bill-gates-makes-the-world-worse-off
@urlyman I know there is a lot to complain about, to me, as far as billionaires (who are generally pretty bad), it feels like at least he tried to do some good with it, the lesson is that that even being that rich doesn’t allow for making systemic differences, and individual contributions can’t be enough even at this scale.
A sizeable portion of the middle / poor class can probably make a lot more difference than a few billionaires, if action is well oriented.
@tshirtman Yes.
People like Anand Giridharadas have written well about specific ‘unsexy’ socially impactful interventions that philanthropists could make but never do. It’s not really surprising that wealth blinds them
