Never cared much for Omarchy: It's being made by a right-wing dipshit with no experience with Linux and distributions who's whole "Opinion" seems to be that "90ies Hacker movie look" is what makes a good operating system.

But when I read this actual review https://マリウス.com/a-word-on-omarchy/ I was shocked by how bad it actually is: Technologically but also as an "opinionated Linux distribution". Sad to see that @frameworkcomputer tanked their reputation within their target audience in support of this underbaked Linux-Hacker-Cosplay thing.

@tante Thank you for having written that article. As someone who is not a technical user, that was really enlightening.

@tante @frameworkcomputer Blech. The content is fine; the JavaScript tag game is irritating.

Instead of disabling JavaScript, that kind of behavior puts the domain name in my plonk-box because the entire Internet is a social contract and even in jest, even in demonstration of capability ("oh, really, pulling someone's random bytes onto my computer can do unexpected things? What a revelation..."), if someone effs around with the privilege of having my client pull their data they've proven untrustworthy.

This kind of thing was stale when somethingawful folks did it and it's more stale now.

@tante @frameworkcomputer It's just basically a step beyond a normal Linux install by a software developer who thinks it's fun to write some janky scripts to customize stuff. Might be interesting to look at for inspiration if you have that inclination yourself, but like the article says people shouldn't confuse it for a distro.

@tante @frameworkcomputer@fosstodon.org

I quickly checked the technical details the blog post links to: https://github.com/basecamp/omarchy/blob/1e859d37cb7fef6ac687442dc1fe515d01d1302d/install/config/git.sh#L19

This script is a "shell script" (I only know that for sure from its extension because it has no shebang(!)), and it has bashisms, which clearly imply that they expect bash as a default shell.

I'm not surprised because archlinux has a history of silently destroying itself via package install scripts when you replace bash-as-sh by anything else, but this is really terrible...

What a steaming turd of a "distro".. Hell it isn't a distro, its just a screwed up version of Arch...

I've been forming a theory lately as i realize that all right wingers i know, ever met, or see in the media seem to be deficient in cognitive reasoning skills. They just cant form coherent thoughts without ping-ponging around in an uncontrolled fashion... It's as though they are dumb and think that leaping from talking point to talking point might mask the fact.

I watched the promo video once after i heard about omarchy and I was curious what makes that distro special. Pretty early into the video one of the major features they promoted where keyboard shortcuts to grok and twitter. At that point I had suspicions that this is some kind of "tech-bro-bullshit" arch linux distro and after checking out the people i kind of felt my suspiciouns confirmed

@tante @frameworkcomputer oof. What a clusterfuck. The part that really baffles me the most by far isn't the absent technical quality but the fact companies put their money to such a project, leaving me to believe that they really simply support the creator, not the creation, which only increases the smell of the shitpile Framework has put at its own doorstep

@tante @frameworkcomputer@fosstodon.org I didn't read the whole review on my phone, but the summary certainly is damning.

I could have built a custom Debian installer for Framework machines, but I guess that's not media sexy. And now it's too late.
