Big ups to everyone who stayed away from work today in solidarity with the joint strike in support of NZ public service workers;

Shame about the weather in the southern half of the country forcing the cancellation of many of the planned public rallies. But all the more reason to hold a series of them after the weather settles.

"A union organiser says striking staff returned to Nelson Hospital this morning to care for patients after its back-up generator failed in a power outage."

Of course they did, they care about the wellbeing of patients. Unlike the current government who are cutting corners on hospital rebuilds all over the country. Increasing the likelihood of similar breakdowns in the future, putting patients and staff at ongoing risk.

Staff cease strike action after generator fails at Nelson Hospital

The Health Minister has ordered an investigation into why the generator failed, and an audit of all back-up generation across all hospitals.

I'm no fan of Labour and it's history of centre-right policy cosplaying as centre-left. I'd be slamming them just as hard if this corner-cutting on hospitals was a bipartisan affair. But it really isn't this time.

The last Labour government listened to health workers and patient advocates and had committed to a robust replacement and maintenance scheme for health infrastructure. The current government redirected huge wads of public money to landlords and road building companies.
