Why I Built a Homelab (and Why You Might Want To) by @Wiobyrne
https://wiobyrne.com/why-i-built-a-homelab/

Thank you, Ian, for this post, which has me thinking and reflecting.

"In a world where AI models, data, and even creativity increasingly live behind corporate APIs, building a homelab felt like reclaiming a small piece of the digital stack. It’s a way to experiment, to fail safely, and to remember that the web was once something you built, not something you simply used."

@dogtrax I was thinking about you while working on this post. I was wondering...why would anyone want to read this? It's "off-brand" for my readers.

And then I thought back to playing and learning with CLMOOC, DS106, Webmaker, VineOffs, and others, and realized that we've all been moving in this direction. :)

@Wiobyrne I just finished Tim Berners-Lee's @timbl interesting new book -- This Is For Everyone: The Unfinished Story of the World Wide Web -- and he ends on an optimistic note that, to me, resonated with your Homelab post, of getting back to making. He writes about individuals having more tools for privacy and more control of their data, freeing us up to be creative again. I want to believe in this, that this is the direction we are heading (but honestly, I am just not sure). #clmooc

quote from Tim Berners-Lee: There's still time to build machines that serve the human, rather than the other way around. There's still time to forge connections between people and use technology to fight for our rights. There's still time to recapture our data sovereignty. There's still time to build community. There's still time for the individual, for the child, for the parent, for the elder, for the West, for the East, for the developing world, to come together to build technology to promote the dignity of our fragile species on this isolated globe. We can do it, all of us, everyone, together.
