Facebook post from Kakuya Shakur, Assata Shakur's daughter who was born in prison:

At approximately 1:15 PM on September 25th, my mother, Assata Shakur, took her last earthly breath. Words cannot describe the depth of loss that I am feeling at this time. I want to thank you for your loving prayers that continue to anchor me in the strength that I need in this moment. My spirit is overflowing in unison with all of you who are grieving with me at this time.

Sending much love and appreciation to you all,

Kakuya Shakur

Earlier this year, as they do every year since 1979, the state of New Jersey posted a $2M bounty on Assata Shakur's head as their most wanted person.

The US continues to this day to jail several elderly and dying Black Liberation activists of Assata's generation, she was one of the free living heroes of that era and I'm glad she got to experience freedom (albeit outside of America) for most of it.

For Black activists especially, we know the judicial system does not serve us. The entire process is designed to economic, emotional and physically break activist.

Assata gave birth in prison while still in shackles the entire time. She was severely beaten by female guards right after birth. She faced inhuman prison conditions throughout her trial in addition to flagrant racism in court.

A fair trial was never possible.

We know Assata Shakur didn't kill the cop because she was shot through her right arm, forensics indicate while her arms were raised above her head.

The shot instantly paralyzed her arm.

The only non-cop witness described a scene that didn't not include Assata firing a gun.

It was later revealed that FBI agents and a New Jersey Assembly member secretly met with the jury during their sequestration and directed that Shakur be found guilty.

Injustice through and through

Be sure to give this song a glow up, and to read Assata's letters. You can find this song and her writings on her website below (sadly some broken links). 👇🏿

"Black brothers, Black sisters, i want you to know that i love you and i hope that somewhere in your hearts you have love for me. My name is Assata Shakur (slave name joanne chesimard), and i am a revolutionary. A Black revolutionary. By that i mean that i have declared war on all forces that have raped our women, castrated our men, and kept our babies empty-bellied."
