“The prime minister will not be announcing a BritCard, it’s not called a BritCard, and it isn’t even a card ..

We’ve got boarding passes, train tickets, Tesco Clubcards on our phones already, and I can be very clear that you won’t be required to carry it or produce it except to prove your right to work in the United Kingdom.

So people may be inclined to try to play politics or to try and anticipate what this is…this is not a card, it is a digital ID.”

??

Douglas Alexander, Scottish Secretary

Tony #Blair’s old crony Douglas Alexander making sure the collapsing debate around #IDCards is as clear as mud…and amounts to nothing more than having a Tesco club card.

You can smell the condescension mixed with desperation in Downing Street.

Oh look they’ve dragged out another old #Blair crony…David Blunkett. He’s always been a big fan of #IDCards…but erm, he seems to have forgotten why:

“I’m mystified that people haven’t come out with a highly coherent view of why we need it, why it would be beneficial to individuals.

Why aren’t our people coming out and arguing this case full on? We need conviction politics now and we need it urgently.”

What would that case be David? If you don’t say it out right, there isn’t a case, is there?

But what are the benefits of a digital #IDCard system?

Suggestions floated today are that:

a) it helps employers quickly recruit people…there was me thinking interviews were about checking skills and aptitude.

b) they make it ‘easier’ to access disability benefits…but shouldn’t that depend on physical and mental need, something assessed by a medically trained human?

c) can be used instead of a passport…no physical document required to travel, that’s going to be a hacker’s dream
