💻 Digital Revolutionary Infrastructures (Very Encrypted) aka DRI(VE): #EmailSecurity

🔙 #Email is around since the 1980s and is still used by billions of people everyday. But how does it work?

🪧 The success of email is mostly due to being based in protocols.

Protocols are a set of rules on how a node communicates with other nodes, allowing information exchange. Email uses the SMTP protocol for sending messages and POP3 or IMAP for receiving messages.

#BreakDigitalFeudalism

By being based on protocols, Email cannot be owned by anyone - it's just a set of rules, a convention. This allows decentralized communication. Your university server can communicate with a Gmail server to exchange messages, for example.

⚠️ Gmail - Google's email service has been trying to monopolize Email since its launch in 2004. They can read all their user's emails, profile the user and sell their data to advertisers. This practice goes against the spirit of Email and violates our basic data privacy rights.

⛓️‍💥 As a response, different companies and collectives have started offering encrypted and ethical Email services. SR recommends activists, but also just anyone, to migrate to one of these services.

✊ Let’s do it together!
- Step 1: Create an account in any of the following encrypted email services (Proton, Infomaniak, Disroot, others)
- Step 2: Migrate subscriptions etc. to new address (this can be a process in which you use both)
- Step 3: Disable Gmail as an app on your phone!

Next week we discuss further steps to transition away from big tech.

❗ If you can, set a timer for yourself to switch E-Mail provider by then (e.g. make a #Proton account).
