Telling. Quantity of male versus female dialogue in best picture films of recent decades

(by @puddingviz)

A horizontal bar graph titled "Men speak most in best picture winning films," showing the proportion of words spoken by male and female characters in Best Picture Oscar winners from 1991 to 2016. The graph displays the year and film title, followed by two horizontal bars for each film, representing the percentage of words spoken by women (purple) and men (dark blue). The graph visually demonstrates that male characters consistently have a higher proportion of spoken words compared to female characters across most of the films listed.

@infobeautiful It is missing 2012's (The Artist) and 2003's (Chicago) best picture winners. I'd bet that Chicago would be an outlier there.

Of course, it wouldn't change the trend even if these films had 100% female dialog, but it leaves an odd feeling that the chosen metric, cutoff, and missing data points were an attempt to cherry-pick for impact.

Reality is usually messy, but changing the data and analysis to fit your message is always dishonest.

@infobeautiful This is so weird. The Silence of the Lambs and Million Dollar Baby even have a female lead.

@infobeautiful Since 2016:

Moonlight is male-dominated, seeing as it's a film about gay men.

The Shape of Water has a lot more male dialogue, but that's because, although the lead character is female (Sally Hawkins), she's mute.

Green Book is a film centred on the relationship between two men, so that's obviously going to have a lot more male dialogue.

Parasite I'm not entirely sure about. Probably more male dialogue, but I'd have to watch it again.

Nomadland definitely has a lot more female dialogue.

Everything Everywhere All At Once would probably have more female dialogue, as most of the main characters are female.

Oppenheimer is very male, female characters are little more than set dressing.

I haven't seen CODA or Anora.

@infobeautiful as a #woman #actor, I would be interested to see these #film data in relation to their director and screenwriter gender identities. 📊

@infobeautiful

Does this reflect only the desires of men, or also those of women?
😀

Seriously:

I'm 60, and I haven't seen any of the films released after Gladiator. And that was a film about a man.

Except for Birdman, I see a clear trend afterward that doesn't indicate any improvement. And judging by the title, that also seems to be a film about a man.

@infobeautiful
And how much of that is due to the main character being male?
