European Commission

🗳️ Today is #DemocracyDay.

Built on voting, speaking up, and staying informed.

We’re not just celebrating it.
Together, we’re nurturing it every day.

Democracy, fundamental rights, and the rule of law are the backbone of our European Union.

️We are supporting free media, fair elections, freedom of speech, and citizens’ access to reliable information.

Because in a strong democracy, accountability matters and every voice counts. 💬

@EUCommission Democracy includes respecting the right of citizens to speak freely in both public spaces and in private arenæ such as IM chat networks.

The proposed "EU Chat Control" removes our ability to organise peaceful demonstrations and protest movements without fear of political sanctions.

The proposed "Chat Control" is what the KGB, Stasi et al could have only hoped for in their wildest of dreams.

Privacy is the right of all citizens and without it democracy will die.

@span EUCommission kinda hypocritical that the EU vows for democracy, yet the Chat Control proposal vows to turn the EU into a techno-fascist authoritarian state?

if you really cared about protection of children online, you'd focus on empowering parental controls and educating parents to teach their kids what to avoid and how to navigate the web, not propose indiscriminate surveillance of images and messages that are falsely triggered for CSAM due to a faulty AI moderator.

@span EUCommission We are speaking up against the genocide in Gaza, but you smear us as antisemites and support arresting or harassing us while you keep violating international law to back the genocide.

Europe is messy, but I guess it's the best we have in a world that's pretty wobbly ATM...

@span EUCommission You're aware that word #democracy comes from "demos" (people) and "kratos" (rule), right? What we have instead is corporatocracy (at best).

I.e. I assure you it is not People in EU that decided they want their #privacy violated by #chatcontrol and similar laws.

Let's put it up for referendums (you know, the *real* democracy stuff) if you don't believe me.

@span EUCommission It‘s a pity to see politics undermined by rightwing disinfomants, surveillance laws on the rise, national governments (e.g. Germany) openly defying European Law while at the same time sabotaging Citizen participation and the according organisations.
#DemocracyDay is nice. Acting Democracies defending their values and living up to the idea of that day, all the time, would be better. Alas, it‘s currently only wishful thinking, the money flows differently.

Hello @span foufoutos!
The EU is a democracy. Article 2 of the Treaty on European Union makes clear that it is founded on democracy, equality, human rights, and the rule of law. You are directly represented in the European Parliament, elected by EU citizens, while EU countries are represented in the Council and the European Council. And citizens can even shape EU policies directly through tools like the European Citizens’ Initiative and European Citizens’ Panels!

@span EUCommission I am quite familiar with the EU treaty and it is a good founding treaty of representative democracy.

Unfortunately, for reasons unknown, no one at the time foresaw the damage that would be caused by various practices such as lobbying, the non-election of the chairman of the committee directly by the people, unholy alliances in parliament, the attempt by various political circles to abolish unanimity and much, much more.
