Remember the 1998 Tiger Pokedex toy?

It was almost a good toy! As a kid I was torn between Absolutely Over The Moon with how cool this thing was and deeply disappointed at all of its flaws.

I oscillated like mad every time I played with the thing, which was every day because it lived in my bag with my pokeballs and all my various knockoff pokemon toys. (I'd hide them in the grass and then try to catch them with a Bungie corded spring loaded knock off PokeBall.)

I keep thinking about it. I don't know what to think about it. I played with one the other day, for the first time in nearly two decades.

The screen was too small and too low resolution, and it didn't do enough. It did almost enough, but not actually enough. (The digimon d-terminal would later fulfill the lost promise of the tiger pokedex, being better in every way except that it was digimon.)

@ajroach42 I've had mine for several years in a box of things to "clean up and decide if it's worth either selling or doing something with"

@ajroach42 I still have mine! The alphabetic-order keyboard drives me absolutely bonkers as an adult.

Anyway, eink and esp32 something something I could make that toy but I'm not going to because it needs a whole world to go with it.

@ajroach42 You do have Expedition Sasquatch. But can you have a Pokedex with one creature...

I guess there are other cryptids. But a one-creature Pokedex would be funny.

@ajroach42 I don't KNOW, but I'd imagine at 8k followers you could get a lot of help with that. Filtering it through you or whoever would still take work, of course. But that probably also depends on the end goal. (For bonus points, how well do solar panels like on an old calculator work?)

@Jeffool you'd think! But getting folks excited about contributing to a project is tricky! (Speaking from my years of experience trying to get #JG off the ground.)

When I say "build a world" though I mostly mean producing and releasing media associated with the thing that the 'dex is for. I have *So Much* lore and backstory for some of the ongoing media and game and toy things I'm working on, but getting that out as a comic or a game or a show has to happen before the Dex makes sense.

@ajroach42 Oh, I was COMPLETELY suggesting creating 'dex entries before you released the corresponding media, entirely thinking of the stress that comes with writing yourself into holes you'll have to later write yourself out of. Not that I believe limits always encourage creativity, just as a "fuck it, why not" effort, to see how it goes. Regardless, much respect.

@Jeffool my most recent game (soon to be finished™️) features a "biolog" which is basically a Pokedex https://ajroach42.neocities.org/game/

It's set in a universe that has so far seen at least two podcast episodes a few short stories, and an episode of a cartoon.

I've got a couple of different ongoing projects that have some kind of in universe encyclopedia, all of which are in various states of completion. Part of my writing process is to do a lot of reference material first, which I can reference or amend as needed. I do it that way to make working with collaborators easier.

Currently in the works are a couple of narrative podcasts, more video games, a comic book, and several lines of action figures. Once I get the Pokedex hardware figured out, I'll probably slap one in to several of those worlds.
