Advertisements on YouTube are beyond intolerable now. Just listening to an hour of two people talking results in an ad every five minutes, with the skip button alternating different positions.

It’s so shit, but so much of the good content is still on there. I’d love to find a way to get more good creators onto #PeerTube instead, even if they’re just mirroring a channel.

To me the main issue seems to be one of costs. They'll do it if it's profitable. For that we need to find enticing, but non-evil forms of monetization (subscriptions? #podcasting 2.0 sat streaming? Something else?) and find ways of helping to lower the cost of hosting, which I still maintain could be strongly helped by creating a desktop app that automatically seeds videos the user favorites. This way users, who often want to support #Peertube can add their storage and bandwidth to the network rather than the costs being all on the video creator.

If we can make it easier to bring income in with less costs, the hatred many Youtubers feel for #Youtube should dp the rest.

I think TILvids does the best job of providing a compelling alternative, but their own policies of not allowing servers to follow them is extremely shitty.

They’ve done a remarkable job with carving out a distinct community, though, and they have an evangelism playbook for creators that more instances ought to follow.
