Just saw this "design contest" for the Euro banknotes. It's not a consumer contest - this is a tender for professionals.

They have specific themes and motifs requirements and each design proposal must comprise of six banknotes (€5, €10, €20, €50, €100, €200). There is no money in applying.

If you are invited to Phase 2, you get EUR 5,000. If you are selected for Phase 2, you get EUR 10,000 extra. If you win, you get EUR 10,000 extra.

There is a section to the terms which says "Award criteria" and I guess that means you can only take part if you meet that criteria, which is "Education and relevant work experience (40%) and Proven track-record of
creative work (60%)"

There is also a round of "public feedback" but not before it's been reviewed by a 20-strong jury of designers and professors from across Europe.

It feels a little belittling to call it a "design contest".

Designing six banknotes across two themes (so, twelve) is a big job.

Especially when you have to jump through so many rounds of tenders and presumably make artwork ready for production or make rounds of amends based on feedback.

If you "win" and make it to the end you get 25,000 EUR (just shy of 300,000 NOK) and - I'm not in the graphic design industry anymore - but that doesn't feel like a lot for such a high profile job with a lot of work involved.

But maybe it is? Idk.

@matt Sounds very bad to me, and I'm saddened that the EU has fallen to this practise. Because it is a very easy way for corporation to get cheap/free labour. And the participants get 'paid in exposure' or some nonsense.

How about give the creator a fee for every note printed with their design? Now that would be a great prize.
