Just to let you know, I think we have very different perspectives on LLMs
@urlyman Probably. I am a proponent of AI/LLMs. I don't think we have the luxury of denying and turning our eyes away from them. So, I believe we need to be #AdultsInTheRoom. The true problem is that we have to prevent the wealthy and oligarchs from controlling them. Competition from foreign sources is, as far as I can tell, our only hope. I have worked with them since the 90s. I left corporate America because funding for my AI project was pulled--saying AI would not amount to anything.
I don’t see any prospect of that working out well. Nor of it not continuing to help funnel wealth to the already obscenely wealthy/powerful.
Ironically, this might help bring forward the scale of crash out of which course correction becomes possible. But not by design
I want to be as small a part of that as I can
@urlyman That's if one takes a strictly #Dystopian view. I would argue that the invention of writing or any of these transformational technologies is and was equally unprecedented in context. As with any transformation and technology there are positives and negatives. I will guarantee that if we do not accept our new context someone else in the world will develop it and use it to their ends and not ours.

I think you may be misconstruing what I regard as the context. Which is understandable as I was not explicit.
The context is rampant overshoot. Tech which cannot be metabolised by life and so its outputs are accumulating in our own bodies as well as the living creatures we are busy destroying, upon which we rely. Tech that is utterly reliant upon stable, predictable, controllable environments in an environment we are making more chaotic…

That chaos that we have created is itself accelerating and is proving that our assessments of our own path are dangerously inadequate/wrong https://mastodon.social/@urlyman/114947913968160990
Most of that tech has not been AI and so, for the most part, AI has not created that context. But it is the context in which AI sits and it is now actively accelerating that trajectory
