Wonderful interview with @rbreich who thinks all Democrats should be (must be) progressive democrats. One of my heroes. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/26/magazine/robert-reich-interview.html?unlocked_article_code=1.ZU8.rrFG.7U7FUttAV8tL&smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

I met him twice. I dreamed of doing a phd at Harvard and he was the one I wanted to study with. Perhaps in 1982? I travelled to Cambridge and he agreed to see me. Spent 30 minutes with him, he was very gracious. I couldn’t afford Harvard, ended up at Indiana University (which was great), but it was a thrill to see Harvard and to meet him.

Many years later, after he was out of government and at Berkeley, he sat across the aisle from me on a flight from Washington to SFO. I didn’t want to bother him too much, but we got to chat for a while. I reminded him we had met a long time ago and we talked about the Internet and government databases like EDGAR and Patents. As we deplaned, he came up to me and said he thought I was doing important work. I treasured that moment, still do.

@carlmalamud we have never met - but I wanted to say I was listening yesterday to the Geek of the Week conversation https://town.hall.org/radio/Geek/092993_geek_ITR.html with Robert Braden. as I was trying to figure out how #ARPANET worked on System/360 computers.

Thank you!

I met you years ago at Sun Microsystems when I was a Lab Manager in the Networking group. Since then I've also thought you were doing important work. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work.

@carlmalamud it is funny how compliments from people can stick with you for years. They are acts of kindness.

I made a mental note to not be gratuitous with compliments but also to make them whenever I can.
