What's the earliest founded organization (including countries and public services) to have an "official" account on the fediverse? (I mean the founding date of the org not the account)

@liaizon Oxford Political Review has a Mastodon account; and it's technically a part of Oxford University, a school that goes back at least to 1096 (earliest factual evidence) if not earlier. The publication itself, however, only dates back to 2018, so I'm not sure if this counts.

@liaizon I think the best candidate would be some Roman Catholic diocesis. Regarding German dioceses, there is an account for @bistumtrier, which dates back to Roman antiquity, although I cannot decide whether it is an official account. @bistumpassau, @bistumwuerzburg, @BistumAugsburg were all founded the 8th century. There might me many accounts for very old dioceses in other countries as well.

The University of Padova was founded in 1222! They are at @unipd, which puts them as my top running contender for the oldest organization to have a fediverse account. If you can think of any older organizations that are pressent here let me know! Thanks @Uilebheist for your research in finding them!

Roman Catholic Diocese of Trier dates back to 250AD ( @bistumtrier)

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Würzburg was founded in 741 or early 742AD ( @bistumwuerzburg)

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Augsburg dates back to possibly the 11th century but seems the exact date is uncertain ( @BistumAugsburg)

Thanks for discovering these accounts @steffenloewe!

@nemobis @steffenloewe is thete a good way to query wikidata for the combination of age of organization + existence of fediverse account?

@liaizon Well of course you can in SPARQL https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:SPARQL_query_service . For your first SPARQL query maybe you can start by taking inspiration from an existing one, e.g. https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Nemo_bis/Queries

@liaizon @unipd @Uilebheist

There are some Japanese business which have operated since the 900's CE which might be worth checking to see if they have an account.

The absolute record would have to be Kongo Gumi (578 CE) assuming they have an account 😁🤷‍♂️

@liaizon @eff @BBCRadio4 Oh I thought you meant joined, lol! BBC is very old, so you're probably right on that one. I follow a lot of tech accounts, so probably none of those apply. I thought EFF was old, but they were only founded in 2013.
