I dunno maybe edtech was a bad idea and we should be spending university funds on books and scholarships

To be serious for a moment, it's not edtech that's the bad idea, it's proprietary locked in edtech. FLOSS edtech is a good idea, so long as the institutions fund local devs to contribute to the core and to support local customisation.
