@hipsterelectron honestly I use that because it's really hard to actually specify what distinct technology or dividing line you want to draw for the last few generations of generative voice models. ML tts is I'm sure a thing that was gradually progressing but without personally being aware of it I don't know why it felt so jarring to at least an outsider

@hipsterelectron like, yes, but the general public outside the tech world /maybe/ has heard of LLMs at some point, and I don’t think I can do better than “so called ai” in that context

@Lunaphied i don't think calling it "AI" tts is really responsible. you can say that newer technology is better than older technology without associating it with the "AI" political project

@Lunaphied i'm not remotely familiar with the technology used and can't specify a better distinction. i think it's worth pushing back on the hagiography that uncritical usage of the term serves to inculcate
