@MicroSFF alternative ending:
“To disappoint them one last time, preferably in alphabetical order.”
@MicroSFF Oh! This was actually the main job of one of the characters in the show Extraordinary. She could summon the dead into herself and they would speak through her, so they could settle legal issues.
"Ugh. You people will do anything to avoid talking to a lawyer!"
@MicroSFF You'd think this would be a standard service in a world with necromantic magic.
@MicroSFF Now I'm wondering about the profession of soldiery in a world with healing magic.
“And that was how I lost my arm that third time. Some people say you start getting used to it but to me it always feels just as bad.”
@mjd I suppose it matters a lot how long it takes. If the mage just makes a ritual gesture and the soldier's arm is restored instantly, that's a different situation from the soldier is invalided for six months while medics working full-time grow their arm back. The army would have more incentive to prevent soldiers from losing arms in the second case.
@wollman Yes, but either way having it chopped off must really suck.
Oh, geez, in that world the practice of torture is even more brutal than it is here. In our world you can only boil someone in oil _once_.
