Got my official Canadian census form delivered to my house (even though mail and packages cannot ever get delivered to my house, because it's rural), and then got derailed by the second question which asks for my address and doesn't accept land locations (I do not have an address! I have a land location! This is how rural Canada works! How does the census form not accept this???)
Discussion
@sundogplanets Do you have to wait for a census taker to come back to your house and help you fill in the census forms?
@sundogplanets For someone (non-Can) mildly interested in location referencing this looks like a potential rabbit hole…
“Land location”?
I was going to poorly joke about ThreeWords but from what I gather it is actually a quad tree system? Too late, I’m intrigued

@sundogplanets Aotearoa switched to distance-based rural addresses to avoid the whole "The Robinsons, Robinson Rd, Rural Delivery Route 3, Nelson" problem. They're now 1032 Robinson Rd (10320m from the N/E end of that road)
Which also means you can guess the street number :)
@sundogplanets This might be one complaint your local Conservative MP would be eager to jump on...
@sundogplanets how does your fire department find you?
@quoidian The fire department is all volunteers and they all grew up here, so I'd probably say the name of the old guy we bought the farm from and they would know exactly where we are. (They recently put addresses on all the driveways with houses, but they are not for delivery or mail or anything except emergency services. I have doubts about whether or not emergency services actually know these new addresses or not)
@sundogplanets
"What is official is incontrovertable."
You have a unique firenumber, on a named road, serviced by a post office. You can use that.
@sundogplanets You could use the phone option and see what the official person says?
@Canageek I just waited on hold for 10 minutes and gave up. I'll try another day. Presumably EVERY SINGLE RURAL CANADIAN has the same issue as me.
@sundogplanets This is a very weird change as you think they would have emailed down the address wording decades ago
@sundogplanets
Back in the day, Dad had to ask the post office at the little town in California for an address. Before that, the house was known as the Caswell place, rural route 1.
