I know this is a personal preference, but I think fediverse has a much better "branding" than the Atmosphere.

(That's what Bluesky is part of, like Mastodon being part of the fediverse.)

@stefan "fediverse" is also a searchable term. "Atmosphere" is very overloaded. (unit of measure, description of an environment, etc.)

@thzinc Yep, exactly.

And it just sounds...empty? Non-Earth planets have an atmosphere, so it doesn't always signify life.

Yeah, "fediverse" may sound too geeky now, but not really different from "internet". And you can just say "fedi".

Some people seem to prefer to use "ATProto", which is the protocol powering the Atmosphere, but that just makes "fediverse" sound like a cool slang term in comparison. And what if there are more protocols in the future?

And some spell it as "ATmosphere" in reference to the protocol, which, yeah.

And what about those usernames?

Again, personal preference, but "@ Who @ Where" just makes sense to me. As opposed to "@ my website".

I have several websites, I put my work on them, but none of them are *me*. ATProto-style handles may work for organizations, but the mental model just doesn't fit for me.

@stefan The @who@where thing implies there has to be a where. It's not compatible with nomadic identities, and those would simplify a lot of stuff. Namely, all the clumsiness inherent in changing instances. If it were just a @who, you could move wherever and the traffic would reach you anyway.

@jorgecandeias That is a fair point, but again, this just fits my mental model better.

An ATProto handle still refers to a website, so you're still kind of tied to that, and might eventually want/need to change it?

And fine, not everyone is a fan of the official unofficial fediverse logo, l will concede there.

Does the Atmosphere even have one?
