1/ You open your phone “for a second”, suddenly it’s well past midnight & you’re 42 reels deep. We call it brainrot, but what if that spiral isn’t just a willpower issue?

Many of these experiences are shaped by design choices that maximise engagement, extract data extraction & shape behaviour.

These systems amplify bias, deepen social divides, distort information ecosystems & quietly reshape our social contract, too often and without meaningful accountability.

2/ We deserve digital spaces that respond to our choices, not quietly steer them.

This means recognising that the harm is not just in data misuse or individual manipulation, but in the very business models and interface logics that define today’s digital economy.

The upcoming #DFA is a crucial opportunity to tackle manipulative and unfair platform design, building digital environments that are fair by design and by default

A fair digital future at risk: EDRi’s contribution to the Digital Fairness Act - European Digital Rights (EDRi)

The European Commission closed its Call for Evidence for the upcoming Digital Fairness Act (DFA) on 24 October 2025. EDRi urged the Commission to tackle deeply harmful forms of manipulation: addictive design, deceptive design, and unfair personalisation, which undermine people’s fundamental rights to privacy, data protection, autonomy and equality.

3/ The @EUCommission must deliver a bold & future-proof #DFA that provides a structural response to structural problem. It should:

✅Redefine legal concepts to reflect how all users are vulnerable in digital spaces & how some communities are hit harder
✅ Embed fairness as a design principle
✅ Ban deceptive and coercive design
✅ Limit exploitative personalisation
✅ Guarantee users the right to a non-manipulated version of digital services
