Sucessfully updated all my boxes and VMs to the 6.18.8 Gentoo binary kernel and everything is working flawlessly. The Gentoo kernel team is genuinely *amazing*, especially considering that over the span over a few years the distro went from "you have roll your own config and handle bootloader configuration yourself" to "you can install in a completely automated way a binary and everything works out-of-the-box".
@gabrielesvelto I completely agree.
Though, since I wasn't aware of this when I returned to Gentoo last fall, I *did* install manually and I regularly *do* compile my own kernels* 😅
* And convenience aside, why wouldn't you?
@ftranschel I've got Gentoo on a number of different boxes, some of which are very underpowered and compiling a kernel on them takes forever. So before I would compile it on one box, make a dist of it and then manually copy it over on the other. Pulling in binaries is much easier. And the binary packages are also well-integrated with the bootloader post-install scripts, so I can have a Secure Boot setup working with basically no effort and no manual steps.
