Mastodon.social has no advantages at all over any other server. It has no special status or special privileges, it uses exactly the same software as other Mastodon servers.

TL:DR - It's far far too big, it's putting the entire decentralised nature of the Fediverse in danger.

The main server is the one least likely to shut down because the maintainer can’t afford to keep it running. Unlike on Bluesky it’s impossible to actually migrate to another server if yours suddenly vanishes, and even if the old server is still running you can never migrate your posts to a new one, so the safest option is to pick the safest server.
Or… join the atproto network instead with Bluesky, where these problems don’t exist.
