@njr summarization is one of the strongest use cases. JPEG for works is pretty awesome, just like JPEG for images. Is it somewhat lossy? yes. Does it look a LOT like the original? yes, but always check of course.

btw the LLMs are really good for countering Brandolini's Law. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brandolini%27s_law

@codinghorror They are literal bullshit generators.* They can only counter bullshit with more bullshit. Even if you use an LLM to counter bullshit, you need to verify that the bullshit rebuttal is in fact correct.

* bullshit in the sense of Brandolini and Frankfurt.

@codinghorror Is summarization the same? Doesn’t really seem like it. And Imthink jpeg is a poor analogue. Predictable artifacts, mostly very localized. LLMs can completely reverse meaning summarizing. It’s more a jpeg encoder that sometimes inverts the image, and sometimes mixes your image with some others…

But Insee slightly more where you’re coming from!

@codinghorror OK now do “energy required to explain to someone how the LLM has lied to them”

@codinghorror ... are they? It still takes energy to run the LLM. The math might equal out. 😂

@kboyd these types of folks aren't really clever enough to use that kind of tooling. If they did, the LLMs would actually look at the website content. Unlike the person, clearly..

@codinghorror I am just wondering if [energy to refute BS by hand] is equal to [energy required for an LLM to refute BS].

But it sounds like you're referring to the energy required to create the BS, which raises a whole different comparison.
