This law is using the boogyman of 3d printed guns.... which notably still need bullets and barrels, so... maybe regulate those actual GUN parts instead??

The issue is that this law in plain english says you are no longer the owner of your device. You don't get to choose what firmware to run, only the govt approved ones.

It's so broadly written that it appears to apply to ALL CNC machines.

At the end of the day this is end of right to repair in WA if this passes.

@nullagent This bill is obviously technically problematic, but it does NOT require that 3D printers send a copy of every file you print to the government. It requires that detection software that filters and refuses to print certain gun parts be integrated into printers.

This is obviously technically difficult and problematic for any number of reasons, but it does not require the specific thing you claim it requires. Here's the actual text of the bill:

The link seems to be faulty. It's missing an f at the end

If you're a WA local please call your reps TODAY!

You can contact your legislator free of charge by calling the Washington State Legislative Hotline at 1.800.562.6000

The operator will put you through to your elected official when you provide them with an address.

You will be able to communicate your displeasure (or pleasure) with their policy on a given issue. The member’s staff will take note of call volumes.

Not only does this bill prevent you from modifying your machine this database of banned shapes is clearly the infrastructure needed to police EVERYTHING you print.

Oh that shape of a part for your car? Yea that's copyrighted and if you try to print it your in trouble!

Oh whats that, your medical device is over charging you for simple plastic parts? Go kick rocks!

You modded a printer and made your kid a toy, that's not copyright approved? You're a felon now!

Finally as we all know well in cybersecurity if you have a data set valuable enough... some evil hacker may try to steal or ransom that data!

By actually having a BIG pile of actual dangerous shapes collected by the leakest, dumbest cluster fuck of organizations is maybe not going to do much to prevent that data from being exposed.

Oh look at this one where they lost control of data AND had $600M of funds stolen!

Washington state Auditor's Office data exposed during computer hack, agency says

The Washington State Auditor's Office said Monday that online information of 1. 6 million people who filed for unemployment benefits last year may have been inappropriately accessed on Christmas Day when the data systems of a third-party provider were hacked.

Louis' video points out tons of massive technical issues.

This part is key, depending on how the fw complies with the law it requires basically the fw to secure boot so you can't yeet it.

THEN it must phone home to the WA Govt for EVERY print.

So... imagine if the WA govt just sucks at running that interlock server?

Say its DDoS'd, out to lunch, version incompatibality, or even you don't have internet but have power and need a print?

TO BAD
